Velvet for Overcoat

Fabric Notes: I bought my velvet from silkconnection.com; it only comes in white so I had to dye it blue myself. I bought 14yds of it and had quite a bit left over after cutting out my pattern. After dyeing it, I measured the velvet to be approximately 42 inches wide. |
Dye Notes: I first washed my velvet on a gentle cycle in our washing machine with a little bit of Woolite©. I then made a dye bath in the washing machine with 10 boxes of Navy Blue RIT Dye, about 1 cup of salt and some detergent. I put the velvet in the dye bath and let the washing machine gently adgitate it for a hour keeping a eye on it. Next I rinsed out the velvet a couple of times and washed it again on gentle cycle in the washing machine and then put it in the dryer. Dyeing it this way worked really well and I am quite happy with the results. |

Sleeves added to bodice

Notes: The coat is completely lined with navy blue cotton and the sleeves with navy blue polyester fabric that has a rough grain to it.
I had to add a layer of cotton to the back of the bodice pieces because the velvet is thin and the piping kept stretching the velvet out of shape.
I made my own piping by cutting long strips of satin and folding it over left-over cording from the embroidery. I made a mistake making my piping though; I had cut all my piping fabric along the grain instead of diagonally against it (this helps the piping stretch around corners better). I didn't think about this until after I finished my overcoat so the piping doesn't lie down very smoothly. |
